Bridging the Digital-Physical Divide
Why GenLogs is now preferred over digital-only compliance & vetting platforms
There are a lot of great Follows on X these days, but Craig Fuller (@freightalley) is one of the best. His posts are often insightful and data-driven — and this one was no exception:
We spoke to Craig after this post and can confirm that the brokerage is NOT a GenLogs customer…but, as is clear from the post, they are a Highway customer. Over the last month they are averaging two loads stolen each week — despite the alleged protection that the leading digital-only vetting platform affords its customers.
According to NICB, the average value of each truckload theft is $200K per incident. Statistically, that means this brokerage had $1.6M of cargo theft occur this last month while they are paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to digital-only vetting platforms to prevent such theft. At the same time, other brokerages, like ITS Logistics, have an industry low critical incident rate of .004%. Both brokerages use Highway — but only ITS Logistics uses GenLogs.
So what is the difference?
GenLogs is the only platform able to bridge the digital & physical divide.
Over the last few months, GenLogs has investigated over 300 theft incidents from customers using digital-only vetting platforms to vet carriers. FreightCaviar ran an exclusive in which various brokerages using Highway, RMIS, or MyCarrierPortal were all hit by the same theft ring. In almost every single case, the carrier allegedly involved in the thefts was verified on these platforms without any red flags…but then the carrier disappeared from the roads.
For example, thieves posing as MTC Cargo Inc hit a few Highway customers in March 2025. When GenLogs looked at MTC Cargo Inc’s physical footprint on the roads the previous 90 days, it looked like this:
This carrier, based out of Illinois, only had one truck when it was operational and never was observed in California. Then, it disappeared off the roads for over three months before thieves, having assumed the carrier’s identity, started bidding on loads out of southern California. Multiple brokers checked the carrier in Highway, and everything seemed fine…but it wasn’t.
GenLogs is the early-warning system that something is amiss. Previously, we wrote about GenLogs being able to observe a bankrupt carrier disappearing from the roads before media outlets ‘broke’ the story:
It is that steep drop-off in activity that would cause any freight broker to throw a red flag…but, until now, brokers had to manually check each carrier in GenLogs to see if the physical footprint matched the digital footprint. But that is about to change…
Something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving!
This Thanksgiving (Nov 27), GenLogs is launching its own suite of compliance & vetting tools! We will have all the standard compliance filters that you may find in other platforms, but with one big difference: GenLogs’ sensor observations will be a key component of determining Pass / Fail or Needs Further Review.
Here is a little sneak peak:
Whether you are vetting a carrier found off a loadboard, or sourcing carriers directly with GenLogs’ Carrier Intelligence tool, you can now filter to only engage carriers that are still active on the desired lane with the desired equipment. This is a game changer! This is how every broker can now replicate ITS Logistics’ industry-low critical incident rate. This is how the $1B+ brokerage that Craig Fuller posted about can eliminate $1.6M-per-month of thefts and prevent churn from unhappy shipper customers while cutting down their insurance costs. Speaking of insurance costs…
Reduced Insurance Rates Now Cover the Cost of GenLogs
We recently had a large insurance company start using GenLogs for underwriting and claims investigations. They were so impressed by the platform’s ability to detect and deter theft that they informed us that they would be willing to cut a freight broker’s annual insurance cost by over $150K. For the freight broker being discussed, this would cover the full cost of GenLogs’ Carrier Intelligence product. Talk about instant ROI!
Why would they be willing to do that? Well, the stolen cargo claims are costing this insurance company — and every insurance company for that matter — millions of dollars each year, despite their brokerage customers using digital-only vetting platforms. To attain ITS Logistics’ industry low critical incident rate, and reduce the theft claims to near zero, it is a no-brainer for the insurance company to offer such aggressive incentives to get GenLogs’ industry-leading protection.
Verified-by-Video Ground Truth Data
GenLogs’ truck-tracking camera network now spans from coast-to-coast and collects over 15 million of images of trucks every single day. GenLogs regularly observes nearly 300,000 active, for-hire carriers on the roads — including over 20,000 carriers that have never had an inspection. Fraudsters and thieves can’t spoof having a truck regularly running lanes on the roads — they either consistently operate a truck, or they don’t.
What they can spoof are ELDs or other phone-based tracking apps. Simply connecting an ELD is not bridging the physical-digital divide. It is trying to check one digital footprint with another digital footprint. Both can be spoofed. Both are being spoofed. Just ask Guy Fieri.
In the theft ring written about by FreightCaviar, the ELDs were connected and reporting back locations — but upon gaining access to the cargo, the ELDs were shut off. At that point it was too late, and that is why all the digital-only vetting platform customers came running to GenLogs: we were their only hope in recovering the stolen freight. It is our desire to prevent these thefts from occurring in the first place — and you do that by bridging the physical & digital divide.
Life-or-Death Vetting…From Terrorists to Trucks
Vetting is in our DNA. GenLogs’ founders spent time at CIA and supporting the Intelligence Community to determine if clandestine sources were real or potentially double agents. When CIA got it wrong, officers were killed. It was truly the difference of life-or-death to get the vetting of terrorist sources right. CIA accomplished this by using sensors, satellites, and other sources of data. It wasn’t simply enough for an al-Qa’ida source to self-report their loyalty or access to a terrorist leader…CIA wanted to have eyes-on the target.
GenLogs uses the same counter-terrorism playbook to combat cargo theft. Instead of tracking terrorists, we now track trucks. Self-reported data by carriers is not enough. ELD connections that can be spoofed are not enough. We physically put thousands of digital eyes on the trucks. This is CIA-caliber intelligence that we put in hands of freight brokers, shippers, insurers, and law enforcement.
GenLogs’ Compliance Filters are FREE to Tech Partners
One more important aspect of GenLogs’ forthcoming suite of compliance tools: the Pass/Fail/Review carrier compliance filters will be available via API to other FreightTech vendors for free!
We understand how important detecting fraud and deterring theft is for the industry and if a brokerage is already paying GenLogs for our platform, then neither them nor their other vendors should have to pay extra just to see if a carrier passes or fails their compliance rules, or is already onboarded or not.
Unlike some companies who charge other vendors, GenLogs won’t nickel and dime the industry. GenLogs’ APIs are free to other vendors supporting mutual customers. This is just another way that GenLogs is different.
